His Career

In 1987, music director and singer Jagjit Singh offered Sanu the chance to sing in the Hindi film Aandhiyan. Sanu then relocated to Mumbai, where Kalyanji-Anandji gave him chance to sing in the film Jaadugar. Kalyanji-Anandji suggested that he change his name from Kedar Bhattacharya to Kumar Sanu because of the prevalent caste/region-based favoritism in Bollywood and to give him wider appeal outside of a strictly Bengali audience. He has one son named Jesee from his first wife.

Sanu started off singing Jagajit singhs film songs.Dil ghabratha hai Aanh bhar aati hai was a hit so was Kis mausam maien a top class rendition exploring the range of the singer.Perhaps the only singer to have worked with composers of the like of Naushad,Ravindra Jain,Hridayanath Mangeshkar,Pt.R K Razdan,Kalyanji Anandji,Usha Khanna etc. Kumar Sanu has also sung Gahzals.Albums like Do Ghoont,Nasha,Nazarana and Sadma are a few of those. It is definitely a treat to listen to Sanu in Bangali.Jibone amar,Tumi Acho eto kaache thai,Ghumao chad and Chorono komole aami are some of the songs in which he unleashes the legend he is. Apart form the melodious voice and poignant rendition his true talent is reflected in the experiments he does in his vocals. Aankhon ki gustakhiyan,Sheeshay se bani ek ladki,Is thara aashiqi ka asar are only a few testimonials for his rare talent. Chehera kya dekh the ho,Kitni hasrat hai hame,Bikre sulfon ko sajane ki are terrific renditions made by him. Sanu's breakthrough came in 1990, in form of the film Aashiqui. The music directors Nadeem-Shravan got Sanu to sing all but one of the songs. Sanu gained overnight success. The hit songs from Aashiqui included Sanson ki zaroorat hai jaise, Tu meri zindagi hain, Nazar ke saamne, Jaane jigar jaaneman, Ab Tere Bin Jee Lenge Hum and Dheere, dheere se meri zindagi mein aana. He won the first of his record five consecutive Filmfare awards as Best Male Playback Singer. His next Filmfare Awards came for songs in the movies Saajan (1991), Deewana (1992), Baazigar (1993), and 1942: A Love Story (1994).After winning his fifth consecutive filmfare award, he decided not to accept any more awards in order to encourage young talent. As Javed Akhtar pointed out" It's a matter of fate that i have penned this song, but Sanu has rendered it in a way nobody can do". He was talking about Kuch na kaho! Band honto se ek baat kahi is one of the all time great songs in the history of playback.Aankh hai bhari bhari aur tum,Huse badal gaya woh niganhe to kya hua, dheere dheere pyar ko bada na hai.

If you continuously play his songs you will have a non stap treat for 77 days back to back to listen to all the songs he has rendered in different languages. This is no exageration of the fact as the singer has already 14000 songs to his credit.

He is often credited with having one of the best voices of all the playback singers. He has also sung the most number of hit songs of all the playback singers. He is counted amongst the top playback singers of all time alongwith the likes of kishore kumar, mukesh and Mohammed Rafi. From years 1990 to 1996, the bollywood music industry was regarded as one man industry.

Sanu became a favorite with Nadeem-Shravan. He rendered many hit songs in movies like Sadak (Tumhe apna bana ne ki kasam khayi hai), Deewana , Baazigar (title song, Kali kali ankhen), Saajan (Mera dil bhi kitna pagal hai), Pardes (Meri Mehbooba, Do dil mil rahe hain), and others.
